This page has been frozen on the 8th of December 2006. Based on the info available bellow (thanks for your contribution) we will put together version 1.4 of Inline Search which will rock and we are hoping to be able to release in the new year. Should you really want something done please send us an email at contact@ieforge.com.

On the 7th of November 2006 we have released version 1.3 which fixes many bugs please install it or read the ChangeLog ... with your feedback Inline Search is getting better with every release ;)

Features Requests

Minor interface tweak

Date: dec 5 2006
Feature: a small label notifing when i jumped to the start of the page OR end of it after clicking the find next or find previous.

Could the close button (x) match those of IE7's that appear on each tab? This would help to integrate InlineSearch into IE7's look and feel and make it look like it was a part of IE7

Also, perhaps drop the separator line between the close button and the find text? Something about it makes the bar look slightly strange to me

These are really minor tweaks to an amazing little program. You must have it right as I can think of nothing important to request! :)

Thanks for the comment ;) We have been visually bothered by the separator and the close button ever since we started working on that little beast ... unfortunately it seems to be the default component made available by Microsoft for add-ons developers ... but we haven't given up :P

Search history

Remember last 3 or 4 searches. Those would appear under the seachbox as a dropdown.
Very useful when you search the same term over and over on a daily basis.

Search History. Put a history of searched text along the remaining space in the search-bar, much like Google Toolbar does, so that if I am searching on multiple strings, I can just tap on one of the history "buttons" to switch between search targets.

64-bit version

Release a 64-bit version of this add-in.

Scrolling

Next to Ctrl+F giving focus to the search box, the thin I'm missing the most is the fact that the page only scrolls as far as is necessary to display the found search phrase. Often the phrase is in a sentence that continues one line lower. If I want to read it, I have to grab the mouse and scroll down, or use a key combo to get focus out of the search box and back to the page, after which I can use the arrow keys.

Often, if there are multiple occurences of the phrase on a page, I have to search, scroll down a bit to read the entire sentence, go back to the search bar, search again, scroll down again to read the next sentence, etcetera.

What would make all of this go away, was if you made the page scroll so far that the found phrase is centered (vertically) in the window (if the page length allows scrolling that far down). That way, you can read as much text surrounding the phrase as possible, without the need to scroll.

That's absolutely brilliant. We should have thought about it. We are not sure if it will make it in 1.3 but be sure that it is at least on the 1.4 roadmad ;)

Along the same lines, it would be nice if you could scroll the page up and down without the search box losing focus. That way you could search for something, scroll up and down a bit, and hit enter again to see the next result without having to re-click the search box. This is how it works in firefox.

Localization

I am a user in China. This is a good add-on for IE. Can the developer provide a easy way to translate this add-on to the users' local language? For example, adding language files so user can edit to make InlineSearch in their language. Thanks!

I wish this feature too

We are about to release version 1.3 which does not include localization yet but 1.4 definitely will! In the meantime please contact us by email if you are willing to translate the odd text displayed in the add-on in your own language.

Find as You Type.

Firefox has a feature: "Begin finding when you begin typing". This allows you to auto-find on a page without pressing CTRL+F or /. I'd really like to see this option!!

This is a feature I use on Firefox extensively, and would love to use on IE7 too: the ability to begin finding when I begin typing.
I vote for this feature too. At the very least the find textbox should receive focus when I press CTRL+F.
Absolutely must have this functionality to make Find As You Type complete.
Please make this an option, if you do implement it -- I hated when Firefox would steal my focus when typing in a textbox. I like my Ctrl+F just fine, thank you :-P
I wish this feature too, in FF is buggy
This is a must have feature. But as with most features it should be an option. (the more options, the better I say)

Shortcuts

In Firefox, you hit ' and there you go: it searches links only. Nice if you want to browse without using the mouse. A single-key to start the search is preferrable, and I'd like it to be the same in each browser.

Add the ability to customize the shortcuts (CTRL-F / F3 / SHIFT-F3 / ESC ...) let the user decide.

Mozilla/Seamonkey type find, just hit / and start typing your search string.

Ditto the above. Let users just hit / ala Firefox OR let them pick another key. Thanks for this great app!
Another vote for / instead of Ctrl-F (or at ability to customize shortcuts).
I second that emotion... ‘Ctrl F’ has to set focus to your find box!! This app rocks thx guys.
Another vote for Ctrl-F setting the focus to the find box!
Can "ENTER" key be a shortcut to "click" highlighted links?

Allow selection of options "Find Next/Previous", "Highlight All" with Keyboard
To not have to use the Mouse would be HEAVEN.

Find Next/Previous can be accessed with the keyboard by default with the standard F3/SHIFT F3 (we are thinking of allowing shortcut customization in the future). We haven't thought about adding an Highlight all shortcut but we'll look into (the more shortcut the more conflict risk ;)

Is CTRL-G taken? That's the key bound in Firefox to Search Again, easy because it's right next to CTRL-F that initiated the search. And if the search wraps around, then Find Previous is less of an issue. Finally, an ESC should make the search bar go away.

Auto-hide

Add an auto-hide feature a la Firefox than can be turned on and off.

Default off

A new tab or window should not have the inline search bar visible. This is currently not the case if you used inline search on the previous tab/window. This behaviour would be preferred as searching is specific behaviour and thus not likely needed on a new tab or window. If the user wants to search, he/she can enable it again easily. This is also how IE7 default's ctrl + F works i think.

Thanks for fixing this, it works great in version 1.3

Version

Please consider displaying the add-in's version number somewhere (maybe right-justified on the toolbar).

If you leave the mouse on the IEforge icon for a couple of second the version is displayed. We didn't want to use too much screen estate displaying a version number. We'll try to come up with something better ;)

Highlighting

It would be nice if you could change the highlighter color and make it so the highlight button can be turned on by default.

The state of highlight all or match case should be remembered between browser sessions.

I would like to see an option to turn the highlighting off when I close the find bar.

We second the request for an option to turn on the 'Highlight all' button by default. But obviously remembering the last state of this button (and Match case) will be the superior solution.

Mini-page view

I would love it if there was a button to activate a feature like the MSN toolbar's highlight viewer, it's a small window containing a snapshot of the page, very handy.

Does it have anything to do with Inline Search? Maybe this should leave in the Wishlist.

A Firefox like search feature was probably the most requested feature for IE7, what Microsoft couldn't do you did. 1/2 the success of IE7 will be down to this one toolbar, no pressure.

I am sure there are many people at Microsoft who could have done it. They just chose not to ... that's an opportunity ;)

Search Options

Find Whole Word. The only thing missing that the default search dialog has is "Match whole word only". Any chance that could be added?

+1 on this

Support Regular Expressions. I would love to see the ability to perform regular expression searches. This is something that would be very useful.

Regex for a <quick> search bar?

Misc.

Digital Signature. Sign the installer and toolbar with a digital signature. This guarantees authenticity and integrity.

For Internet Explorer 7, it would be nice if search text could be maintained between tabs, and opening/closing the bar on one tab should open/close it on all tabs. I understand this may be difficult since IE plugins are hosted per page, not per window, but I'm sure there's some ugly hack that'll make it work. ;)

Integrate with IE7 Web Search. Is there a way to integrate the search function into the "search" bar at top (i.e. the google/MSN/wikipedia search bar)? That'd be neat.

Reposition Search Bar. Add the option to put the Find Bar at the top of the IE window, or on the Left hand side.

Remove Sizing. The current bar is not resizable, but you are able to drag it for resizing. It would look nice if the bar would be solid and could not be resized: just looks a little better :)

Other vote for this, sometimes I see the middle lower of the page "flash" because the toolbar autoresize too

As far as we know the default component provided by Microsoft that we are using has no option to not be resizable. We are looking at alternatives but ... haven't found one yet. If anyone knows how to do that please contact us!

Issues/Bugs

Still Support IE 6?

Inline Search works well on my XP/IE7 system, but fails to install on my Win2000/IE6 computer. The install error is "could not load InlineSearch.dll" despite being admin and shutting down virus software and unloading Google Toolbar. Was support for IE6 dropped?

Ctrl+F

Ctrl+F Does Nothing. When I do Ctrl F and then click on the page, if I do Ctrl F now, the bar does not get the focus.

Please make sure you also fix the first bug. If you have the window selected and the search bar open, ctrl f should give cursor selection to the search box.

Fixed in 1.3

Ctrl+F Opens Built-in Find. If you press CTRL+F while the focus is in the address bar or the search bar, the default IE7 search box appears instead of the inline search bar.

Oops! We will fix the Ctrl-F issue when focus not on the page in v 1.3.

I just wanted to let you know this bug is still present in v 1.3.

Ctrl+F Clears Search Bar. 1.3 fixed the issue where the Ctrl+F shortcut wouldn't bring focus to the search box. Great! I'm glad to see this fix in there. Unfortunately, it clears the search box every time. What if I want to simply change the search text? I'll have to re-type it. I'd like this simply select the text in the search box instead of delete it. If someone wants it deleted, it will be removed when they start typing.

F3

Find Next (F3) When Search Bar Closed. When the seach box is open, F3 finds the next instance. But, if the search box is closed, it brings up the default IE7 search box instead of the inline search bar.

Ctrl+W

Ctrl+W doesn't work if focus is on search bar.

Escape

Esc Not Working In Internet Explorer 7 the Escape key does not work as it is expected.

Confirmed that ESC doe not work in IE 7.
What exactly do you mean by not working as expected? I came here to ask that the highlighting be turned off when you press escape. Is that how it should be in IE7?

... What I'm really saying is I'd like to have highlighting enabled all the time, but when the search bar is closed, the highlighting goes away. And when I open the bar again, the highlighting option is selected. Does that make sense?

The AdvancedESC regkey doesn't appear to work as it used to. Hitting ESC doesn't clear the search box with this option on, and instead it just closes the bar. :-(
HKCU\Software\IEForge\Inline Search\v1\Options\AdvancedESC is set to "yes"

The ESC key should close the search pane when the focus is on it (e.g. when the cursor is in the search field). We did not plan to add another shortcut to turn off highlighting the more shorcuts the more add-ons the more risk of conflict but we'll see what we can do :P

Visual

In my browser (IE 7) the controls on the incremental search bar appear not properly aligned vertically, which looks a bit sloppy. (But anyway thanks for a great add-in!)

The searchbar will re-appear automatically when i restart the browser if i didn't close the searchbar before the last browser exit (it remembers its last state like any other browser toolbar). {Maybe the "auto-hide" feature request is the same}

Not Found BG Color. When text is not found, the search box bg color is red. The white-on-red text radiates slightly. I'd like to see a different shade of red be used that doesn't have this headache-inducing color combination.

Search Does Not Work when you are on GMAIL

If you try searching for the word "Inbox" or "Compose" which are obviously present, the Search says word Not found.

The Google crew are just way too smart for us! Seriously we'll look into it. They must be using some pretty schnazy tricks to do such a cool web app that's confusing Inline Search :( IEforge outsmarted by Google... aren't we all :D
Fixed in 1.3 see ChangeLog. We were not really outsmarted by Google :P it was just a stupid mistake in the code dealing with frames.

Running as non-admin in Vista

If I install InlineSearch as an administrator and attempt to use it as a non-administrator in Vista, nothing happens when i type ctrl+f. Everything works great if I do the same thing in an elevated IE7 instance.

The installer performs a per user installation. You need to launch the installer from a command line and specify ALLUSERS=1 (as an admin, of course) for the Add-on to work in limited user accounts. The ALLUSERS switch could be specified in the installer. Other than that, a very fine Add-on. Thanks.

By the time Vista is released we will have upgraded the installer to deal with this!

Highlighting

Highlight All. Search for something on the page, and put highlight all on. Then delete the entry from the searchbox by backspacing from the end. After you deleted the last letter, this letter is still selected for words on the page.

I think this is fixed in 1.3. The first item is still selected, but none are highlighted. I personally don't think this is a big deal. Perhaps I'm missing something, tho.

Highlight does not persist during next search. I have seen when I highlight (H) search setting it does not stay active until user disables it.
To repeat the senario, go to next IE tab, do a search on web page, you will see highlight settings disabled. I don't know its a feature per search, per page, or accross the browser.

By default Inline Search should (we still have a few issues to solve) treat every tab independently . We will more than likely offer an option to override this and allow a user to share settings across tabs in future releases it is not in 1.3 though.

Highlights does not disappear once inline search bar disappears.

Thanks, we'll fix that in 1.3!

It'd be nice if, like in Firefox's search, when inline searching highlights a link, hitting the Return key will open the link. Makes web browsing very fast. Thx and keep the great work!!!

Toolbar button

It would be nice if I could toggle this bar on/off from an optional toolbar button. In IE7 it is called "Customize Command Bar" when you right-click on the toolbar beside the tabs. (My grandmother can not remember CTRL-F)

With or without the toolbar button, perhaps overriding the Edit > Find (on this page) menu item might be worth a look.

We made the decision not to override the Edit > Find in some ways to respect the existing work ... we'll address the button issue in future releases i.e. post 1.3

Search Bar

Clear Button. A button right beside the "Find:" or the input box that would clear the input box would be helpful.

With version 1.3 pressing CTRL-F when the search pane is already open refreshes it i.e. it clears the input box. We'll consider adding a button in a future version ...

Search Bar Menu.

The search bar's menu has 2 options, About and Options, don't seem to act as expected. When I see "About" and "Options", I'm expecting to get a dialog box with product information and additional add-on settings, respectively. Neither of these does this. Instead, they go to web pages. I suggest renaming them to mention the fact that they go to another page (i.e. "Homepage" and "Feedback"). Honestly, "Options" doesn't even have anything to do with what the webpage is for.

Point taken. The reason why Options points to the web page is because before making it behave like user would expect we wanted to collect as much information as possible regarding what type of options and customizations our users would like. We have a much clearer idea now and will more than likely start implementing them in future releases henceforth the Options behavior will change. Regarding the About ... we'll consider renaming it to HomePage or change the behavior, doesn't seem as critical to us ;)

Multitab support

Add option to have the Inline Search bar opened in all tabbed webpages within IE, when opened in one page. And also, when I search for a word in tabbed_page_1 and go to tabbed-page-2, it should (optionally) directly apply the search in that page also. Case; very often when seraching information one uses the tab-feature in IE7 to open info in several pages. Then the search can be re-used in another webpage.

I strongly second a motion for multi tab support. do it just as above post states. I see there are thirds, fourths and.... hundreds of people requesting/looking for the same option on many internet posting boards. please at least make an option to have the inline search bar on all open and all new opened ie windows.

Automatic Open on Startup of IE7

Add option to have the Inline Search bar open automatically upon startup of IE and always automatically open on new tabs.

Shortcuts

Shortcuts Don't Work When in Search Box. When you activate the search by pressing CTRL+F there is no way to close the tab using CTRL+F4. You have to close the search by pressing ESC or set the focus ouside the inline search. I think it would be better pressing CTRL+F4 closes both inline search and active tab.

This problem is with a number of shortcuts. For instance, neither Ctrl+N nor Ctrl+W work.

There is no way we can handle all the shortcuts in Inline Search, we have to find a way to send back the shortcuts we don't handle to IE. In the meantime when you are in the Search pane, you are just a ESC away from being able to use the shortcuts ;) We'll work on that!

Highlights

Add option for highlight colors.

Omnipass

There is a problem with Omnipass. If i have your Addon activated, Omnipass does only work on the first tab (Omnipass is a biometrics/TPM-Chip based access control/password manager).

Need Quick How-To

Nice software. Didn't know about use of F3 until I read this page tho. Had to figure out that Esc only works when focus on search box.

Option to stop searching at the bottom of the page (don't wrap to the top)

It would be great to stop searching at the botton of the page with either a 'ding' or better yet, a message saying "You have reached the end of this page. Would you like to continue searching from the top?" Often I'm looking for a key word and don't realize I've searched the entire page and am looking at the same data from the top again.
